La “Maison Gomin,” is a building of Québec city styled as a castle. It was originally constructed as a women's jail in 1931. At the time, women and men were sharing the same jail so this building was constructed with the goal of improving the conditions of incarcerated females. The original name of the building was “Refuge Notre-Dame-de-la-Merci” but was renamed in 1968 after Anet Gomin, the original owner of the lands.
In 1992, the jail was closed, all the prisoners were moved to the prison d’Orsainville and the building was abandoned for the next years. Since 2008, the property got a new purpose, one part became the park “Anet-Gomin”, other became a building of condominiums and the main jail (the one that looks like a jail) became a funerary services company.
