Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today we took some time to do one of the most important things: support local farmers!
The most important thing we can do economically is doing what we can all the time to support local businesses. The country and world relies on small businesses more than you could imagine, but companies like Walmart and others don’t want you to know that because it questions their importance in the world.
With this idea always in mind, we have been trying to do what we can to support our local farms especially. They are the most vital part to the local health and community since they are the ones who keep hundreds if not thousands of people fed. It also helps to reduce waste like packaging, transport and other things if you go directly to the source to get your foods. We certainly do that now!
The farm here is incredibly close to our house so we are glad to get plants and stuff from them. This time they had an awesome sale on grown tomato plants that were already caged. (Don’t love the metal cages, read some stuff about leeching into the soil the chemicals but haven’t gotten a good alternative to them yet) it was 6.50$ per fully grown plant! We were sold and grabbed a few of them!
I also try to grab some nice dirt when I’m there to help make some additional potted plants on the deck. The dirt is nice and local as well, from Maine and it’s organic which is equally as important. They have all kinds of great compost and cow manure as well but I’m not sure if we need that yet, hopefully we can get by with just using the soil here and fertilizer to get us along with the planting season.
The crazy part is that the plants almost didn’t fit in the car! Lol. I’m glad we were able to get them in one trip, I don’t think they would have given me a problem about coming back and doing two trips but that would have been annoying to have to do so I’m glad it wasn’t something I had to spend time doing. The little man was having fun helping me and was excited to sit in the back with the plants!
I also find it fun and important to show the little man that you don’t just buy food at the grocery stores, you buy them right from the farms and farmers that actually grow the stuff. He’s been to more farms in his short life so far than most kids in the cities around the country! It’s a good thing but also sad that people are so disconnected from the way things are grown and produced. Hopefully we can reduce that as much as we can by doing small things like this!
