Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I've got some pretty cool photos to share from our recent trip!
One of the things we got to do a few weeks ago was visit Mount Washington. It was our first time actually getting to go there so it was a lot of fun and really exciting! One of the things our son absolutely loves is anything that has to do with trains.
When we got there we didn't really tell him what we were doing there. He just knew that we were on vacation and visiting places. Boy was he excited when we got down to the train tracks and he saw the train coming down the mountain!
What was awesome about this train was that it was a steam train! Not many of those are around that's for sure. This one is even more unique as well!
One of the cool things about this train besides it being a steam train is that it runs on the cog system. That cog you can see there behind the wheel is what runs the train and lets it go up the crazy hills!
The other fascinating thing about this train in particular is that it uses the same steam engine, with repairs done and newer parts added to it of course, since the late 1800's! I think 1877 was when they said this steam engine was built. That's absolutely insane! The technology is still in use today and works just as well as it did nearly 150 years ago! You can see that the train goes up some pretty insane inclines with the way it's positioned, I think. It's at a pretty sharp angle forward so that the people running the coal fire and the steam is on a relatively level plane when it's chugging up the hill.
I loved the older technology of the thing, how it was still using those old pistons to move the outer wheels and all the joints. Every time we stopped the conductor went out and looked at each of the joints and greased them up so that they wouldn't wear out. Dedication like that is what keeps this train going! I know that it's also about the safety of the passengers for sure but it's also about how much the people who operate the train love to do it. There was a lot of passion in these guys and I think that's awesome for sure.
We got aboard and headed off, up the mountain! I think this was a pretty cool, dramatic shot.
I have a few more posts coming about this really awesome train in the coming days and weeks. Just have to get them written. We had a lot of fun on this train ride and really glad that we finally got to take it. The train closed for the season two weeks later! We just got it in the nick of time that's for sure. I don't know who had more fun on the train, our son or I lol!
