Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today I wanted to share the random encounters we've had with snakes!
Snakes Surreptitiously Sneaking
I don't know what it is about this year but we seem to be a magnet for snakes. The little man and I have seen no less than 5 different snakes this year, and it's only a month and a half into our outdoor adventures for the warmer weather! What the hell is going on there?! Lol.
The place we live in doesn't have that many dangerous critters when it comes to poisonous stuff which is good, and these snakes are no different. They are a non-poisonous few different species of snakes so that makes it a little bit easier. I know in other areas even just a few hundred miles south of us, we have quite a number of dangerous critters and snakes. What we found here though are ones that are dangerous to an extent but only if you piss them off and they bite you, to which you could get an infection from.
This fella here is a water snake, and can sometimes be confused with a water moccasin but that's only to people who are unsure of what they are looking at. I'm not an expert but I do know that these are thankfully harmless snakes to be around and won't pose a threat to us unless we piss them off with which they will just give us a bite as a warning and slither off. He was sitting on the rocks sunning and enjoying life! There were some unfortunate people at the spot we went to and they sadly poked the guy into the water which I didn't enjoy. I wanted to leave him alone and potentially give him a snack if we got something small enough!
Where things started to get a little wild was seeing this fella here! The little man and I go to a lot of different places around us for some fishing and this place is one of my personal favorites. It's got really nice and shallow water which is perfect for busting out the waders and getting into the thick of it! We were exploring around the area when all of a sudden the little man let out a shout! I asked him what happened, thinking a fish hit him or something and he said that he saw a snake!
It certainly wasn't the first time we saw a snake and I figured that it was a water snake like the one above so I told him to relax and come back over until I was done setting up the pole. I got finished with that and we went back into the water and that's when I saw what scared him. I will admit that I was also a little surprised! This thing looks a lot more intimidating than a water snake does, with the different colors and stuff! I was also surprised by the size of it, this thing was a fully grown adult! I wonder what made the thing die, if it was old age or if it swallowed something that ended up killing it. I didn't really want to find out, so I moved it to the shallows as you can see above and left it there for a racoon or some other opportunistic animal to walk by and grab the thing for a snack after the night had fallen.
Fast forward a couple weeks and we get this little shit right here! This is another corn snake, which is supposed to be cool. I was telling @emma-h2 about this little fucker the other day. The little man and I went to this absolutely beautiful place, the Wachusett Reservoir in central Massachusetts and we were walking around trying to catch something. By something, we usually mean fish.. but I guess in this case we were really open for anything we could get???? I will say that I have never caught a snake on a fishing pole before.. and I don't know of many people that have. I have certainly grabbed the little shits by the tail and held them but never have they taken a whack at my fishing bait! I was perplexed by this dude for sure! Lol
What annoyed me even more here was that he stole my damn bait!! I was hoping to get it back from him but nope, he saw this as a meal and fucking housed the damn thing. I was like what the fuck bro?! Give it back! I couldn't go into the water to give it a little tap on the head to give me my stuff back because it was a reservoir and they will fine you if you walk in the water.. so I had to just watch him make the mistake of grabbing my fake rubber worm here and taking it to the dinner table for himself. I wonder if the corn snake that the little man found above, dead, suffered the same fate as this asshole was going to?! I certainly think that eating a fisherman's worm is not going to sit well in terms of the ability to survive. I am hopefully mistaken though and he shit it out whole, the way it went in, or puked it up and moved on with his day of eating small fish.
This has been a hell of an outdoor summer so far, we had no idea that we would be seeing so many damn snakes! Lol I wonder if dandays will see this post, I know he loves snakes and would jump for sheer joy at seeing a bunch of pictures of them :D
