Hi fellow Travelers,
The other day we were able to spend some quality time at a beautiful beach that's new for us, Salisbury Beach Reservation in Salisbury Massachusetts!
Salisbury Beach Reservation is a beautiful little spot to spend time. I am surprised that I haven't spent any time here prior to this!
The area is a remarkable split between a natural reservation that is conserved and off limits and the beach that everyone goes there for, where we are free to explore. The wooden pickets are a common site for a lot of the beaches in the area that still have their sand dunes. Not a lot of sand dunes remain but the ones that do are cool to look at. The grasses are doing well and where lots of really cool looking birds nest at this time of year.
The nesting area, and the signs that prevent people from taking a stroll through the protected area. Thankfully it looks like for the most part people have been respectful of the signs and the off limits areas. It looks like those footprints are old, so the birds are nesting in peace.
There are quite a few fenced off areas and I think part of it is for the nesting but there's also a considerable amount of preservation efforts to keep the dunes healthy and the grasses that grow on them from disappearing. The areas that don't have the fences you can easily see the paths that people walk on, it tramples the grass so it can't grow anymore.
The birds are quite active! I saw one fly over head and was expecting to just see one but I got a nice surprise after that.
A whole flock of those nesting birds flew down to the water and waves. It was a really awesome thing to see!
There were quite a few people hanging out on the sand, enjoying the beautiful sun and sand. One of the things that we didn't explore this time around was the really cool Jetty that was created to make the little harbor. There are two stone Jetty's out there, one on each side of the bay and I guess what some have said is that there are lots of harbor seals that hang out on the rocks. Lots of food for the sharks nowadays! Grateful that we don't have a big affection for surfing or anything like that lol
There are even spots where there are no wooden stakes and people don't walk on the grass or sand so that's nice to see. I also am very grateful to see minimal or no trash on any of the beach areas. Some of the beaches around get a lot of trash all over them and it's pretty frustrating but this one was relatively clean so that was pleasing to see!
A nice view of the mouth of the Merrimack River here as it flows into the bay. The boats from the Newburyport area and whatever other upstream regions all have to flow into this area in order to pop out into the ocean.
Across the bay here, which takes about 45 minutes to an hour to drive over to which is a little interesting, considering it's only a few hundred yards across the water, is Plum Island. This is a really popular spot for the more ..affluent citizens of the area to own property and spend time. We checked that out a few weeks ago and it was pretty nice but incredibly small. The Salisbury Beach and Plum Island Jetty's combine to end the barrier of the bay from the Atlantic Ocean. The water sure is a nice frigid temperature on the other side of that bay!
We really enjoyed the beach and the area, it's a wonderful place to go and we will definitely be spending more time there this summer. The local beaches are beautiful indeed but they are charging parking for more areas than before, where Salisbury beach is one fee for the whole day so we will definitely be taking advantage of that! One of the really cool things about living in this area that we do, there are a significant amount of really nice beaches within driving distance of us so we enjoy spending as much time as we can at the beaches!
