It’s a balancing act for sure. You have to figure out what’s the better option to spend more time on than the other. You likely won’t be able to do it 50/50 but you could likely do 60/40 or 70/30 and still make progress.

Also keep in mind that the efforts you are putting forth now won’t pay dividends for some time in many situations. I volunteered for some extra work a few years ago and my team benefits a lot now and I got a better job recently but it was a 2 year investment, so it will take time!
