Hi fellow Hiveians,
Today we visited a farm and got a little preview of the feathered friends for sale for the holidays!
The other day we needed to make a trip while we were out, to one of the farms to pick up a few things. This is one of our frequent farms during the summer but not so much in the off season, as it's out of the way. We were sort-of close to it and said screw it, let's stop in to see if there's anything we wanted to buy!
When we got there, the little man and I went to go check out the animals they've got. They usually have a couple cows and some other critters but for this, being fairly close to Thanksgiving, they had these poult's out for view!
One of the things that I've made sure to try and get the little man, my son, to understand is that there are multiple uses for different animals in the world. We can look at them and appreciate them but some animals are used for other things too, a major one being food.
He's thankfully largely done well with this as it's not been a topic of too much focus until likely when I take him hunting in a few years. With the farm here, they had quite a few extra turkeys in their cages which, being a big meat farm, they are surely going to be using for someone's dinner plate!
The farm usually only has 1 turkey in the cage here, that's who we've seen the past 2 years since we've started going to this farm. For whatever reason, which we think is because of the proximity to the holiday, there were a heck of a lot more turkeys in the cage!
The little man enjoyed it because we were outside waiting so what better to do than interact with the animals?! He surely thinks the animals are a lot cooler than other things, no complaints there lol.
The turkeys were quite hungry, or they were just happy to see someone interacting with them. Most of the animals we see and get to play with enjoy eating grass. We don't go around and do foolish things like give them obscure things but pretty much all of these animals will eat grass and not get stomach issues, so that's what we feed them and they certainly enjoy it!
There were also these really cool looking chickens. I forget the name of them but they have all kinds of wild hair but what's the coolest and funniest part about them is that they've got furry feet!
When we first saw these types of chickens I was thoroughly confused at why they had feathers on and near their feet. For whatever reason that's a trademark of the breed lol a little silly but whatever works! That was at another farm we spent time at where we learned that, and this has kept with me for a while since, as we've seen the feathered-foot-friends a few more times since then! Doesn't hurt to have those knowledge nugs with you sometimes lol.
The turkey in the back there is one that has lived here since the spring I think, or early summer. It was a bird that was quite frustrated being in the cage so the poor fella would puff his chest out and scrape against the cage and ended up grinding off all his chest feathers. I didn't like seeing the fella pissed off about being in the cage so much that he would grind his feathers down but it looks like he's done a bit of a job regrowing them!
What I found really funny too was that there was a milk crate in there with a turkey sitting on top of the nesting box, inside the milk crate lol. It felt like a cat to me! I guess turkeys sleep in trees though, or above the ground so it's not the weirdest thing to see a turkey up like that, but certainly the first time I've seen it! They usually are walking around on the ground lol
What was cool about these turkeys is that they look like they've got a different feather coloration than a lot of the other turkeys, especially the wild ones, that we normally see. I know there are likely all kinds of varieties and breeds of turkeys and they have different characteristics but this was one of the first times I've seen that style feather color scheme. When I've got a few minutes to spare, I think I'll likely look it up to figure out why!
