Hi fellow Weekenders,
We had a lot of fun fishing this weekend! It's spawning season for fish and we took full advantage of that!
One of the really fun times of year if you can catch it correctly, is spawning season for the fish! I remember being a lot younger and really got excited when I went out fishing with my dad during spawning season. You could be sitting right above the fish and they will still grab the lure and give a good fight!
We were roaming around trying to find a good spot to fish for ourselves and weren't having any luck at all, a lot of private property. We decided to just go back to the lake house we spend time at since we know we can find a parking spot but we went to a different part of the lake we tried once before, where we can park right on the road and walk into the spot. We really made a good decision with that one!
The sunfish aren't the most interesting fish to catch but it's still fun to catch them, they fight pretty good and you are almost always guaranteed some type of fish to hook on! A friend of my dads eats them but I'm all set with that lol.
Besides the pumpkinseed seen above, which is easy because of their bright orange belly, I don't know the specific breeds of the sunfish but man this one here was definitely the most pregnant one we caught of the day! Momma was tired, hungry and cranky it seems lol she did not want our fishing lure above her spawning bed! I'm glad that we didn't hook her badly, we did end up hurting some of them and killed one because it swallowed the hook so that was sad to see but that's unfortunately what happens when you fish with young children. They don't set the hook properly lol. I thankfully have figured out a way to get the hooks out in some of the situations but not all.
It was interesting to see some of the pumpkinseeds! This one I think was the biggest one of the day, the thing was a giant! They fight pretty aggressive so that's a lot of fun. Not as fun as a bass but that's okay!
For size, it's a pretty good amount bigger than my hand! We catch quite a bit of the smaller ones but the real big adults are a lot of fun. This particular section was prime territory for them, lots of weeds to hide in and shallow water. The bass don't like it but these guys do!
When we got back to the lake property after a while of fishing in the area, we caught about 40 of the sunfish so that was a lot of fun. Eventually our son got bored of it, which was crazy to me hahaha. I was having fun and wanted to keep going but can't blame him, their attention span isn't that long.
We were roaming around the sand and saw some snails on the edge of the water. These snails are an invasive species that the local EPA group has advised anyone living at the lake please remove them and kill them, they destroy the ecosystem of the lake and don't have any natural predators in the water. We pulled a few out of the water and saw some that were alive, lots of empty shells which is good. This one that was alive though, we squished and it was full of babies! I felt a little bad for having to kill it but it's one of those things that isn't meant for this area since they don't have any predators to keep them in check so we oblige the advice.
We had a bunch of fun fishing and are looking forward to when the bass start to spawn, the fish that I'm interested in catching! We have to find a pond or lake that doesn't have crazy boats though, the boats ruin the fishing! A few of the locals are pretty rude about just flying all around the lake, completely ignoring that people are trying to fish and we end up not catching anything besides sunfish. The bass stay far away and deep from all that shit.
