Hi fellow DIYers,
Today we are back with a fun, pretty quick DIY project: homemade fly traps!
One of the things that’s really good about summer is that there’s all kinds of plant growth and blooming. With that means lots of fresh fruits and vegetables on the counters in our houses. What that also means though is that some of those fruits and veggies don’t last too long! The sad reality is that we can’t eat the stuff fast enough sometimes so it ends up going bad. Not the worst thing for sure but just something we have to keep an eye on.
With that fruit and foods in a state of decay, that invites the little shits that are fruit flies! I have no idea how they seem to find the places they do to annoy us when we keep the house pretty well closed but nevertheless they do end up in the house and flying around. We’ve killed about 40 or 50 of them in the past two weeks or so just by clapping our hands and killing them. We decided it was time to take matters into our own hands and figure out a natural way to keep them away!
I forget which website I got it from but there were a few that said a similar thing: one of the best ways to get rid of them was to use some apple cider vinegar and a little bit of soap in a mason jar. Sounds easy doesn’t it? It actually was incredibly easy thankfully lol.
All we had to do was get two mason jars with lids that we didn’t quite care about. The jars were going to stay in good shape but the lids wouldn’t. You fill the mason jars bottom with some vinegar and add a bit of soap to it. I didn’t measure it because it’s not baking or anything so I didn’t feel the need to be exact but I did that and shook the jar up a bit to make the bubbles. The bubbles are what catches the flies in it and prevents them from getting out which in the end kills them since they can’t live long.
All you have to do now is drill a few holes in the tops of the lids on the mason jars and you are in business! We put a jar upstairs in the office room since that’s where we find a fair amount of the things and we put another one in the kitchen of course since that’s where the food is. Not too bad for a way to kill the things!
We haven’t seen too many in the house since we did it but each of the jars has 4 or 5 dead flies in it. My wife couldn’t be happier, she hates bugs and is very happy to have a house that doesn’t have many bugs in it. This wasn’t her best idea of getting rid of them but I didn’t want to spray toxic chemicals in our house, that’s not something I’ll be doing so vinegar it is!
