Today I wanted to laugh a little bit about something that I heard recently: scams that happen all over the place
When we were on a recent trip to a totally different region of the United States, we had a car with us since we needed to get around to all kinds of places. Driving around in the car I was searching for some decent music to listen to and eventually found a station that was bearable. What was funny though, was one particular commercial that rang a bell! I realized that the scam was a lot more widespread than I thought initially!
I guess it's not surprising if you really think about it but there are places around the country that have a pretty significant budget and taste for gimmicks. This particular gimmick was something that I only heard of from this one particular place.
The gimmick is a car dealership in New Hampshire specializes in used cars. They have loads of them. Not too out of the ordinary. What is different about them though is they always offer some type of really cheap deal. This one is "one dime down" and you get a car. If you qualify, the big "if" in that situation, you can drive away with a used car by just putting a dime or $0.10 down. Seems pretty sketchy, right? That's for sure!
What I found pretty annoying was that this place in the southern half of the United States had the same bullshit scam advertised on the radio! They even used the same damn woman! There's no way that it was coincidence. That's when I knew that the car dealership, not surprisingly, was just a part of a large group of people looking to defraud people out of their money. There is no way that they are selling cars for that cheap without there being a considerable upside gain for them. It's similar to payday lenders and those vultures looking to lock you into impossible-to-pay debts.
Car dealers are a tricky business that's for sure, there's a lot of robbing people blind with the outrageous prices they charge for some stuff but one of the things that's particularly crazy is the coordinated way they are trying to steal peoples money across multiple states and regions. I guess it's to be expected with the current climate we are living in nowadays, everyone is trying to pluck those dollars out of your wallet!
I lost a little bit of faith in people when I heard that, I had always thought the commercials were catchy and unique, hoping that it was just a sales gimmick exclusively for that dealer in New Hampshire. Sadly though, it was a lot more widespread than that.
