I'm glad I discovered coins like proof of brain early on ( many thanks to trumpman for promoting it to us plebs from the start ) and managed to sell some when the price was super high at 2 Hive per coin. Moving forward I think the best way to accumulate more Hive is to get as many HE tokens as possible and then sell a part of them when their price goes crazy. It's kind of like an earnings multiplier and combined with buying Hive with HBD when the conversion rate is above 3, I think it's a good strategy for not dying a pleb.
Even though some high profile figures are buying tons of proof of brain and other tokens, my gut feeling is that Hive will always be more valuable in the long run. Time will tell if I'm right or just speaking out of my ass :P
