Hey you, long time no see.
Anyway here's go a review on a most interesting game, as the title says, The Witcher is a really intriguing game, especially for me. I have the entire series available, but I really wanted to start from the beginning with my play. Anyway, enjoy! 馃槃
Origins
Developed by CD Projekt Red and published by Atari in 2007(when people had more important stuff to do than being offended on the internet), the game is an RPG with a QuickTime event gameplay, not the most interesting, but it's there, and it's challenging especially in the beginning of the game.
Locations
The locations are not many, but diverse and enough to make you walk around for hours in an attempt to complete a variety of quests. In my perspective for 2007 the game still looks good, not the finest graphics, as there were games that looked better at the time, but the game has atmosphere, as you know in which quarter of the city you are without checking the map, and this means something, at least for me. The overall atmosphere is contoured with the help of background characters, as the nobleman and lady's will discuss their interests in knights and business meanwhile in the poor quarter you will hear random meaningful conversations as "My balls itch."
Inventory
The inventory is something that you have to take in consideration as will be full after 1/3 of the chapter if you don't organize it. The good part however is that you have a separate infinite part for the quest items, most of the quests at least. This will be difficult as you don't really play RPG's if you aren't a big kleptomaniac and collect even the dust on the counter if that may help you later. But this wasn't enough as being the most legendary Witcher in the world, Gerald of Rivia, cause the game starts with you having amnesia, putting the character in the need to learn again every aspect of a Witcher's life, how to make potions, what herbs to collect for them, all of these under the aspects of books and recipes that you have to buy, read and resell instead of drop, being in need of money most of the game, for that sweet 5000 gold armor, recipes for more potions and herb books.
Fighting
The fighting is really simple, you just have to chose your type of weapon, silver blade for monsters and steel blade for humans, and one of the 3 stances, strong, fast and group, and for the controls to complicate even more, you have to click when the mouse is lighted.
You can still brew potions for health and drink them while being in combat, nobody is stopping you, not even a big hammer in your face to be honest.
Decisions
The game is full of them, and even through they don't look so important, you can even block some side quests as your relationship with a character can be so low that he doesn't talk to you anymore. For everyone, almost everyone at least, to like you enough to give you a quest for money, you better respond to every person in need of help you encounter. This will make the game longer, I don't know if you're into that, but will make your life easier later.
Mini Games
The game has a lot of mini-games present withing the game and their role is a useful one as you can bet your money with NPCs, on a fistfight or poker game. All of them are a great way to generate money in the game (a little advice: save before you enter a game)
The one in the image is poker with dices, a pretty easy game that depends mostly on luck.
Characters
This would be the most interesting part as the game follows the book series closely making every character very colorful and the conversations are an important asset of the game, forcing you to speak with certain characters to progress into the game.
Collectibles
Not the usual type of collectibles you would expect from a game, but some spicy ones, as the developers really put some effort in making boobs look as real as possible for a 2007 game build on an engine from 2004. And for real some boobs in this engine have more polygons than in Gerald's face. But for you to get every card like this one, you have to work, meaning a lot of side quests and money spent on gifts, besides the fact that you have to chose your lines carefully for the girls to open their hearts to you.
Final impression
The Witcher is a game full of good ideas and a bad gameplay, besides that, the world is nicely built around you and it's surprising you at every step. The game situates on the narrative side of the fence, and I must admit I'm the person that loves a good story (especially when you show me boobs...) built around a world. The game has a few bugs you can encounter, but I'm impressed by the fact it runs on win10(I had only 15 crashes in 36h of gameplay through, make sure to save the game 馃槅).
