Eric Weinstein and Lex Fridman discuss the lack of collective action, lack of urgent action, lack of real national emergency on U.S. soil over the decades. Basically the current generations don't understand how to work and sacrifice collectively since we've all been indoctrinated with individual freedoms and liberties and selfishness.
There is a whole phase change going on about how society needs to adapt. Society has been weakened and colonized by thinking from the oligarchs that has stretched inequality from recent generation to generation to the breaking point. There is no clear way to manage the crisis as that it's a rolling crisis and one we were unprepared for physically, institutionally, and pyschologically.
It is a grand experiment. It is an opportunity to bond as a world, or to dissolved. To reform with alliances, or dissolve into full scale depression and wars.
We are still trying to process what's going on... we haven't figured on how to deal with the new reality that is unforgiving.
Also, shell democracies around the world that aren't really representative of the people may finally fall into disarray and tyranny. It is happening all around the world; the U.S. is not immune from that either.
