He smelled bad, he was dirty and poor. He had no magical powers and when he died he really did just die like everyone else. But he still taught the same stuff "be nice to people and treat each other well...." (which is mostly found in the old testament and, coincidentally, he was a rabbi). - Few would be interested in smelly Jesus. And indeed this was the case whilst he was alive. Jesus only managed to amass 13 disciples and one of them turned him in to be executed. Whilst alive no one was bothered about Jesus.
Christianity now is treated like a business. I scratch your back god scratches mine (reward). Or even literally; taxes, donations, crusades. The Vatican is very wealthy and its finances are mostly a secret. God needs money apparently. There is a dual currency which are both false. Spiritual rewards such as heaven or actual rewards such as wealth. You really can have your cake and eat it. They are both false because they start with self interest and selfish motives. The foundation is sand.
The primary motive is self interest. "Whats in it for me?". (A means).
The truth is there's nothing in it for you to be nice to other people, other than your own satisfaction of being kind. That's the whole point. (An end). Not treating others as a way to make money off them or gain some social prestige but rather because being good for its own sake. You don't need Jesus to be kind but you do need him if you want wealth, power and control. He's a good commodity for the corrupt.
