It’s day 2 of Hive Blog Posting Month. I’d like to talk about Twitter and Tribes.
In February 2020, the world started locking down. On Valentine’s Day, Tron announced its annexation of Steem. With positive outlook, some of us made an effort to meet the TRX community. Where did that happen? Twitter!
That could’ve turned out differently. Tronics liked their tech, Steemians liked their tech. What if they build some tech together that they both like. Too bad a selfish asshole screwed that up.
The Twitter ‘town square’ volume turned up several knotches after Steem was attacked. It was the place to be heard and make a stink about exchanges who followed instructions and participated in the incident. And it worked!
Hive is born, HivePOSH is built and thriving. Twitter becomes a tool to funnel people over from Web2 to Web3. That also works, albeit slowly!
Two and a half years later, Twitter has new management. The new owners have grand visions for the internet’s public square. But do we really trust them? They are human, they each have their own motives, and not all of them are altruistic.
Some Twitter users really care about their Twitter experience and don’t want to see it messed up. Hivers, I think, are more indifferent to those changes. Why? Because Hive is home base and they have true partial ownership of their home.
Reflecting on those early Tron/Steem collab vibes, it does make me wonder. What could happen if the tribes united?
There’s a Bitcoin tribe, an Ethereum tribe, and a thousand others. What if the squabbles were put aside for a moment to come together and build? Your tech is great at X, our tech is great at Y. Our tech babies will be great at X,Y,Z.
If you hold anti-crypto beliefs and you want to slow the movement, what would you do? Probably encourage as much squabbling as possible. Because then nothing gets done.
Anyway you see this playing out in the Twitter public square. Because that’s the go-to gathering place for all tribes. So maybe some of the coming TWTR changes will help the right voices be heard. Which voices are the right ones? Who knows! Probably not the ones that seek the most attention.
