In my teenage years, singing during morning devotion was a heartbreaking venture.Growing up as a child in a home where my father is a music director was not funny at all.My father is a lover of music, he composes songs and likes the extra thrill of converting songs in English language to Ibibio and Annang dialects during morning devotion. This family moment is everything.
I like music but when it comes to singing, my voice is amazing
, it is far from a nightingale's. My father was very conscious of the keys we use while singing. It did not go well for me as I was usually the culprit. My father would always notice that I was off key and would be quick to point it out.
On some days, when I am in my joyful mood, I would sing out loud forgetting the 'key correction thing', then it would be so obvious that I was singing my own key, different from others. Almost immediately, my father would bring me out of my wonderland. He would be like;
"Dah owo, nso ke afo akwokwo? Ukopo ke ame woh akpong key mfo"?
'My friend, what are you singing? Have you not noticed that you are out of your key"?
Once I hear that, I would feel bad, my voice would decrease, I would rather sing with my lips than with my voice to avoid ridicule.
I avoided the choir like a plaque, but I enjoyed dancing. Dancing gives me joy unspeakable and utmost pleasure. When I am on it, I do not care who is watching or who is not. I prefer it to singing. I had to learn to stick to keys while singing but it has not been easy .
Everyone is different and unique in their own way. The fact that you are not good at one thing does not make you a failure. You may struggle to excel in an aspect of life but there are other areas which you flow so well with so much ease and expertise.
You are different, an Original,
Do not kill yourself over the things that you cannot do. Find your passion, carve a niche from it, and blossom.
P:S: Meanwhile if you see me in the choir, that is not my duty post, am just filling in the gap
