This is one of my favourite landscapes ever - it was sold before it was finished (my landscapes often do) to a lovely Canadian man who lives not far along the cobbled street from me in Guardia Sanframondi, Italy.
It's a big, box-frame canvas, 1m x 1m, and in oil paint.
It's one of those which came effortlessly - from some tiny wee thumbnail drawings I'd made a year before, looking up to the convent on the hill from the train station...
I like how the image of a wine bottle subtly came into the painting subconsciously: the connection between land, community, spirit, season... The church watching down on the valley below and the labour in the grape fields.
It's a part of the panorama that I also see from my windows up in Guardia every day - and there is occasionally this misty carpet that covers the floor of the valley... It gives some incredible effects with light through it.
The colours came with The Flow too: the original form that I sketched made me think of a beach ball, and I loved the putting together of two such opposing images: convent and beach ball... It was a time of heat and ripeness, with many folks away at the seaside, so this seemed to fit, quirkily!
