This time I want to talk about the new ability called "Martyr", which was introduced together with the new "Rewards" cards linked to the soul a few weeks ago; and I have read opinions from other players commenting that it is really good and dangerous, so, because I was really confused about how it works (I don't know if it happened the same to you or if you still have no idea how it works), I took the time to investigate watching battles of other players to know for sure how it works and I am now aware of how it really works, so I have come to explain everything related to it, at least from the information I have.
As it is such a new ability and the cards must be earned by playing, I have not found on the battlefield with this, since they can not be traded, so players must wait for the cards with this ability they get in the loot chests, I found a battle example of how it works from another user and also, I will give my best effort to show you in pictures its operation and position on the battlefield.
So, if you still don't know how the "Martyr" skill works and you want to learn how to play it correctly, read this post to the end.
What is Martyr and how does its effect work?
Before starting with the examples, it is appropriate that I begin by explaining what "Martyr" really is and how it works from the "Theoretical" point of view, this with the objective of giving you a base before moving on to the "Practice" which is the most important part of the whole publication, besides, I will make very good comparisons related to another quite famous skill that has a very similar effect to "Martyr" and that I know you know very well.
So, what is Martyr?
Martyr as I see it, is an ability created with the objective of having an effect very similar to the ability called "Bloodlust", which, we can find in all the cards of the "Gladius" edition commonly used in the "Guilds" war, although, there are already cards of the "Chaos Legion" edition that possess it, however, with the introduction of the new "Soulbound" cards, 6 new summoner cards were added with an ability that allows us to summon the famous "Gladiators" in ranked battles, the interesting thing about this is that, as we can now through "Conscript" bring the Gladius to the field, with "Martyr" in a way we can face them with a dangerous and unexpected effect if we know how to arrange our cards correctly.
Now, what is its effect?
The effect of "Martyr" is very peculiar and has a very direct relationship in how we order our cards on the field, this is because the monster that possesses this ability when it dies and leaves the battlefield, the cards adjacent to the monster with the ability of "Martyr", gain +1 point in all its statistics, which means that, if we really know how to position our card on the field, surely 2 of our monsters will be able to obtain this effect, so, depending on the monster we have placed around the "Martyr" ability, it can represent a headache for any adversary by drastically changing the outcome of a battle.
However, for the effect of "Martyr" to work and not be a failure, we must take into account the following before playing it:
We must not place the monster with the "Martyr" ability neither in the "FIRST " nor in the "LAST " position on the field, this would nullify its effect immediately, so, if you are thinking of a strategy where you place the monsters in the above mentioned positions, it WILL NOT WORK, so, in order to activate them, we must know exactly the moment to use these monsters.
In addition to the above, if a monster with the "Dispel" ability hits the monster that gained the stats thanks to "Martyr", in other words the "Adjacent" monsters, this would remove the effect of "Martyr", so "Dispel" would be a direct way to counteract the effects of "Martyr".
Last but not least, using the "Martyr" ability when the "Reverse Speed" rule is in play, you must take into account that this ability will give +1 speed point to the cards involved (Adjacent), so, it would not be a good idea to include this type of monsters when this rule is present, although, personally, maybe even under these circumstances, "Martyr" works well, but it is something I have to test and I will do it when you have the necessary cards.
Martyr VS Bloodlust
As I mentioned before, the "Martyr" skill is very similar to the famous and dangerous "Bloodlust", however, there is a very noticeable difference in them and I will explain them below so you can get an idea of why although they are so similar, surely the scenarios where they work are very different, being these aspects very good to detail in a strategy.
"Bloodlust" is really a very powerful ability because it is enough that the monster that possesses it, manages to defeat as many monsters as possible in the field of our opponent, so the position in which we play this card, will depend on the type of attack that the card has and its position in the field, since, if we want our monster to be lethal and defeat, usually use it in the first position is ideal to gain that +1 in all statistics.
On the opposite side we find "Martyr ", where instead of defeating monsters in the opponent's field, the monster that possesses it has to be defeated by our opponent if you want on purpose or with that goal in mind, so that the cards that are around it, can gain both +1 point in all its statistics, it is here where the position of the cards takes greater relevance, since, if our idea is to defeat it, we must place it in a very good position for this to happen.
Conclusion
I hope this post has cleared up all the doubts about what "Martyr" is and how to use its effect in the field, honestly I was very confused with this ability, I really didn't know how its effect worked, but, when in my research I found that it was very similar to "Bloodlust", I could understand in a very simple way how it worked.
This can really create very strong decks, although practically all the abilities in "Splinterlands" there are ways to counteract them with others, so I think there is a fair balance in the abilities that are coming out, that is why it is very important to keep playing and win these new cards, when the time comes to market them, surely the cards with "Martyr" will be very sought after and in high demand.
Without further reference, until the next "Splinterlords".
