Kim Jong Un is not a person to be underestimated. He has a seat at the table, in so much that the entire world is concerned.
He is a very effective leading the nuclear program. By the best estimates prior to 2017 no one really expected the breakout performance of the North Korean nuclear program.
NK has demonstrated in a very short period of time (in defending order):
-They can reach the east coast of the Continental United States.
-They have hydrogen bomb capacity.
-They can reach west coast of the Continental United States.
-They can reach Guam.
-They achieve low orbit.
-They have hydrogen bomb capabilities
By any stretch of the imagination, this is an extremely successful nuclear program.
They have the attention of the world, so what's next?
Here are the highlights of where we are...
-The Winter Olympics are to be held a few short miles away from North Korea's capital in Seoul.
-The United States has a base full of US Military personnel, and a number of Aircraft Carrier Groups within striking distance of Pyongyang.
-China is launching the Petroyuan on January 18th, a direct attack on the US Dollar. (reference petrodollar and Saudi Arabia receiving US Military protection and support as long as they continue to price oil in USD).
-China is worried that if a war breaks out, the border with North Korea will open and refugees by the millions will pass into China, putting a large social responsibility on China. Not to mention the US possibly in a very strategic location to China.
Kim Jong Un is leveraging all of these things to attempt to create animosity between South Korea and the United States.
If he can get traction with South Korea, a deal to re-unify the Korean peninsula is on the table, which is the Kim families ultimate goal since the separation in the 1950's.
This is indeed a possibility.
