If you looked up into the sky a few nights ago you would have caught a glimpse of the incredibly rare super blue blood moon - a rare astrological event.

A supermoon is an event that occurs when the full moon coincides with the moon coming closest to the earth in its full elliptical orbit. In short - the moon looks larger than usual.

A blood moon happens when the shadow of the Earth crosses over the moon. This means the sun, moon, and the earth are in direct alignment. This causes the moon to turn a dirty red hue.

A blue moon is when two full moons appear in a row - the moon doesn't really turn blue, but I could have sworn that the moon looked purple when the eclipse began!

(disclaimer: I didn't have a good camera to view the eclipse but I managed to go down to a nice quiet beach with my girlfriend and view the eclipse. Follow elmere@elmere to see if she posts any nice pictures of the night!)

Thanks for reading! Let me know what you did during the eclipse in the comments 馃寶
