War is never beneficial to anyone, be it the invader or the defendant. Watching war movies made war look common and unreal, however, the Russia-Ukraine war has changed my perception. The list of lives, properties and more, is really not what anyone prays for. I have been following up the updates of the Russia-Ukraine war and a lot of damages have been done to both countries.
The truth is, those behind the war, aren't the ones paying the prize. The ones giving the commands pay little or no prize at all. The soldiers in the war front are losing both their lives and that of their friends. The feeling of waking up today and knowing that you would either kill or be killed. Those soldiers are the ones in best positions to tell you what war actually entails.
What I would do if Nigeria goes to war tomorrow
I don't think anyone from this end would be praying for war, looking at the state of both the Russians and Ukrainians (especially). As for me, I pray for no war, and I hope none will be witnessed by my generation, that of my kids or that of their children.
But if it's inevitable, then I would have to face whatever comes with it. As a man and an Igbo man — that understands and values one's territory and integrity, running from war would be the last thing I would do. In Igboland, one would rather defend his family with the last drop of his blood rather than watch them maltreated or killed. The same way I owe this responsibility to my family, so also I owe it to my country. I
I would stay and fight for my country, if there's eventually war. I would rather die for the safety of those around me (especially my family) than hiding or running. If I run, we will start and fight for the land, for my dear country. If I run, who would there be a place called home for me tomorrow? I would better defend my home and fight for its continuous existence.
And that's why, I respect those Ukrainians that stayed behind to defend their country. There's always a prize, and respect to those that have and are willing to pay the ultimate prize for their land and home.
