Groundcover is low growing plant can cover the bare land and avoid growing weeds from our garden. It is an alternative from planting grass lawn area.

Landscape architect likes to choose groundcovers to plant at extensive rooftop garden as groundcovers are light weight, hardy, sun lover, drought tolerant, non-aggressive roots and can grow in limited soil.

Groundcovers are planted at slope for prevent soil from erosion and drought. The colourful and fragrant groundcovers are selected to enhance the design at main entrance and focus point in our garden. Besides that, groundcovers is used to cover the exposed stems of the shrubs for landscape aesthetic value.

Below are some groundcovers which’s popular to be proposed in parks and landscape area.

Portulaca grandiflora (dark pink), prefer full sun light. It is reaching 0.2m overall height after it’s establish. They grow rapidly and can start flowering in less than 8 weeks.

Portulaca grandiflora (white), Japanese Rose 午时花requires little water, tolerant to dry, well-drained and poor infertile soils. Its easy growing, generally planted at green roof, flowering bed, potted plants or hanging basket.

Dissotis roundifolia, Pinklady is easy to grow, can survive under full or partial sunlight. It is evergreen and reaching 0.3m in maximum height. It is require regular pruning to maintain the shape and reduce bareness below dense foliage cover.

Episcia cupreata ‘Frosty’, Silver Leaf Flame Violet. It likes semi-shade planting area. It’s one of ornamental plants, and can be used for indoor potted plants or hanging basket.

Hemigraphis alternata, Red Ivy is native plant for Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan and China. It’s herbaceous perennial with creeping growth habit. The glossy, silvery purple and heart-shaped leaves is very attractive and beautiful. The leaves are used to treat bloody diarrhoea and skin diseases.

Tradescantia pallida, Purple Heart is native plant for Mexico. It’s low growing succulent with creeping and spreading habit. Its ornamental groundcovers in landscape garden, skyrise greenery, and hanging basket. It’s require little water and full sunlight condition. The flowers colour in pink.
