My Contribution To Communities Brainstorming Challenge by @guiltyparties
On HIVE, I tend to use it to rant about things I find out about like a good little snowflake or share my learnings and hope others benefit from it; I don't actually get too deep in the weeds when it comes to communities so please take my ideas with a pinch of salt.
I am by no means a boots on the ground type, and I am just basing my opinion on what I think could assist community holders to get more out of their community as well as be more aggressive in getting people into their community.
@erikah has challenged me to give a penny or 0.001 of a HIVE for my thoughts, although I'll probably earn more than a penny for them, such is my luck at this moment in time.
So enough about me rambling on, what 3 things do I think communities could largely benefit from right now, let's dive in shall we?

Monetising communities
At the moment, communities are basically a new way of curating content; it has done a fair bit for those who like to run a tight ship while some are free for all.
I think that a lot of the content in communities goes there to die after payouts, the same way it does on the rest of the chain and I think communities who generate traffic from there content should have means to reward them.
If communities had things like push notification, email lists, SMS notification systems, they could pull both HIVER's and non-hivers into their vortex of content, curate and market their content to a wider audience.
They could then sell space in their emails, for that advertiser who wants to reach people in that niche. They could have banners in their community that they have full control over, they could have banner space in their feeds they have full control over to monetise and then share with the community how they feel.
Communities should be able to sell or have gamification, such as custom tags, custom banners, badges with their own mini-store.
They could sell shout outs, do promoted posts with brands and more.
I think the more communities can bring in outside income, the better.
Discussions
While posts do a lot to drive engagement, a lot of community engagement is hidden in the shadows of discord, if communities had open message boards the way Facebook has, with the option to have closed ones (paid ones, another monetisation) it keeps users on-site, drives user retention, keeps them involved and keeps the discussion going in communities.
There's now more of a reason to get in and not have to find an obscure post where comments go to die, but its all in the chat history.
This can also feed into the notification strategy so people can be pinged in discussions to contribute their opinion or to view an article they may have missed.
Fundraising
Communities all have their own objectives, so I think having a DOA of their own would be a cool option. This can be filled by pool inflation from posts in the community, beneficiary posting, donating and tipping.
Communities could do fundraising, for example, to pay for new branding form a designer or pay for ads on Facebook to reach new users with content, pay for their Mailchimp account to send emails.
Create mini reward pools for competitions to keep their community more engaged and much more.
While this can be done already, I would like to see it on a front end, and people can see what proposals to donate to, what they plan to do with it, results of it and more.
