Hey Jessployees!
We're always looking at excellence as this ultimate goal, the ability to be the best of the best. When you're a master of craft we all marvel, no matter how useless that craft may be. You don't have to look far for evidence, hit up YouTube and search for fastest talker, fastest eater, fastest cup stacker the list goes on.
Does the genre of your skill matter?
Sure these people practised and became the best at what they do but are any of these 3 real skills? I guess as entertainment value but other than that when would I ever use that skill or want to learn or mimic that skill? Probably not!
If anything I want to sit around be the best at eating biscuits and watching series but unfortunately no one wants to pay me for that. Even if I'm the worlds best biscuit and series binger do you think anyone would be interested in paying to see that skill in action?
Maybe not before but now it kinda is, You only have to go as far as a twitch stream to see people recording themselves doing nothing and looking for rewards.

What are real skills?
The best sports stars in the world are rewarded with millions because we want to see them push the boundaries of human ability and show us what people are capable of when talent and hard work over time meet.
I totally get that the cost of reaching the pinnacle deserves some sort of reward but seriously people are looking to be excellent in anything to be rewarded. I want to be the best shopping haul YouTuber or the best pizza eating Instagrammer. Is that how we've lowered the playing field?
I'm all for participation but seriously, should there not be a cut off on what we look at as skills that actually add value?
Anything has a value I guess!
I get that if two or more people agree something has value, it then has a value which is why people still vlog about their day even if they did absolutely nothing that day they're able to fill a 10-minute video with something, but then lowest common denominator content or tasks will always be popular since the rate of participation and relatability is so high.
A particular set of skills
The world is always looking for new skills that create value and we call this the job market and most of us will fall into this market in some way shape or form. To trade our skills for money so we can live. In this market, not all skills are equal and are rewarded in various ways. This has been fairly stable for now but it won't be forever as automation takes control.
So certain skills will become redundant and being excellent in those skills won't matter as much anymore.
I guess what I'm trying to get at is excellence is an abstract concept, there is no real excellence apart from what we as people agree on is excellent and has value. So why do we like to push our agenda of excellence on others then?
Oh, you don't have this title, material possession or travelled? Does it even matter if you're not the most qualified or well travelled? What is this excellence of life anyway?
