The role of social media in communication has been a constant topic of discussion.
For years now, social media communication has been able to successfully bring information to people and audiences that previously could not be reached.
It has also enhanced the increase in awareness among people about what is happening around them and even in other parts of the world.
Social media chatting has now become a norm among numerous persons all over the world and without a doubt, it has established a new era of communication.
Through social media platforms like WhatsApp, Facebook, Snapchat etc, you can have one-on-one chatting via instant messaging software. You can also have group discussions via a chat room or a forum.
I definitely am someone who finds online chatting very essential and convenient. Being an introvert who usually doesn't feel comfortable with phone calls, especially with people I'm not very close with, I'd always go for online chatting. Besides, it's much less expensive to chat over the Internet than to make a long distance call. This has always made social media chatting an attractive option for me because I happen to live far away from most of my family and friends.
Chatting on social media has also brought me a whole lot of great benefits.
I recall when I created my first social media account on Facebook some years back with my Mom's phone. I happened to be attending a boarding school at the time. During the holidays, I would always be able to keep in touch with my school mates and we would usually share solutions to our school projects.
I also made a lot of new friends and got to rub minds with a good number of intellectuals on the platform.
Although, I eventually became less active and had to abandon my account when I boarded other social media platforms like WhatsApp, Twitter, Instagram and the rest.
Getting into the university where there are numerous activities to keep up with, chatting has been a constant life saver.
Staying updated was not much of a problem as I could easily get valid information from friends direct messages and also departmental group chats concerning lectures, assignments, exams and a lot more.
However, as with anything, you can find advantages and disadvantages to having social media chats.
Social media chats can also become really engrossing and can cause one to mismanage time.
Most times I lose track of time when chatting with new friends on social media and when this happens, I usually don't get to achieve plans I have set for the day.
I've also fallen victim to several scam schemes through social media chats. Mostly from random messages from strangers, proposing financial opportunities.
In conclusion, the benefits of social media chatting can really not be overemphasized. It has succeeded in making communication absolutely stress-free and it's continuously enhancing interaction between people from different parts of the world.
