Dear @agmoore &
@erh.germany,
Thank you for the discussion under my post. This is really important for sharing information, opinions, and eventually to get a better overview. The purpose of my article was to obtain a comprehensive picture of the Corona-pandemic. For this, I took the raw data and tried to figure out which strategy might be fruitful. Actually, one main result was that the death rate is highly "diverse" across the globe and does not correlate with factors such as age, BMI, pollution, population density etc. in a global context. Of course, correlation is not causation and it is always hard to figure out something in this way. However, these data clearly indicate that the death rate which is counted around the globe differs because of other reasons. In this table, you see the "top-corona-death-countries" (deathrate = corona deaths in pro cent in relation to the entire population).
You can see that San Marino has the highest death rate of all countries.
Now let's have a look at NYC.
According to Google, there were 238,107 corona cases, 23680 has died so far in NYC. The entire population is 8,336,817. That means NYC has a death rate of 0.284 which is about 2.3x higher than the rate of San Marino. Sweden (no lockdown) has 0.058 and Japan (no lockdown) even has a rate of 0.000979 which is 290x lower than the rate in NYC.
Intriguingly, NYC has a population density of about 10,000 persons per square kilometer and a death rate of 0.284. Singapore has a density of 8300 persons per square kilometer and a death rate of 0.000461 (616x lower than NYC).
Singapore has a BMI of 23.7. And according to this website here Young people in NYC have a BMI of about 30, in the Bronx even 36(!!!).
This might indicate that a high population density in combination with a high BMI has a tremendous impact on the outcome of Corona. My entire analyses further display that both criteria must be fulfilled to make Corona a "real killer". Additionally, this would imply that countries or areas with no comparable situation are almost "save". Nevertheless, only after crossing a certain threshold these factors becoming destructive. This threshold is probably the missing link to understand the pandemic.
For me, the best intervention for the government and industry would be a comprehensive campaign to make the people fit, slim, and healthy.
I hope that the people and representatives of the government take note of these facts and use the knowledge for constructive interventions. A global lockdown, however, is definitely no option.
@agmoore: Stay healthy and, if possible, leave NYC until the pandemic is over.
Have a nice weekend
Best
Chapper
