-No podré recuperarla- concluyó.

English version

Miguel's gift to the world

Miguel was a very naughty boy, so much so that almost nowhere was he received without the supervision of his parents, who were tired of apologizing and paying for the damages that little Miguel did.

At the age of 9, Miguel had already visited the school principal's office 10 times and had a file full of warning notes for expulsion.

That year had been difficult for Miguel's parents, they had financial problems and no matter how hard they worked they could not cover the family's expenses, so Christmas was spent with what was necessary and without excesses.

Miguel had plans to write a letter to Santa to ask him for a rustic remote control car that he had been dreaming about for months.

The holidays would be spent at his grandparents' house. The day before Christmas, they packed up all their things and gathered with the whole family.

Miguel's grandfather was a man who had served in the army, so he was stern and loved discipline. Grandma was a lovely old lady with a pleasant personality.

In the kitchen Miguel's parents were talking and arguing about not having the money to buy the gift he had asked Santa for. Just then the grandparents came in and joined the conversation. Grandpa knocked on the table as a sign that the conversation was over as he told them that Santa's gifts were only for children who behaved well.

His mother, with tears in her eyes, understood that her son deserved to be punished so that he would learn his lesson. So that year there would be no gift for him.

Even though everything was scarce that year, Miguel felt it was the best Christmas Eve of his life. Grandma prepared his favorite meal, the cousins made jokes and played at the foot of the Christmas tree, Grandpa enjoyed his hot chocolate, and his parents were at ease that they had survived that year of debt.

Miguel felt lucky. For a second he found himself silently grateful for everything he had received, he even thought he didn't need anything else. But he was a 9 year old boy and he reacted when on TV they started to show the commercial for the car he wanted.

Everyone went to sleep tired from laughing and eating so much. Miguel felt his stomach was swollen, he ate 2 slices of his grandmother's famous carrot cake. He went to bed with the illusion that he would receive his precious gift the next morning and almost immediately after touching the pillow his nightmares began. He sat up in bed startled and agitated. He got up slowly and everyone was asleep in their beds.

He went down to the kitchen for some water, he felt nervous about the horrible nightmare he had. As he was walking down the stairs he saw a bright light coming from the Christmas tree. He walked into the living room a little hesitantly and found himself face to face with Santa.

Miguel froze when the man in the red suit looked at him and told him with concern that there were no presents.

The boy protested, he wanted his remote control car and didn't want to hear why Santa came empty handed.

-*We've lost Christmas," said Santa as he sat down with difficulty on the couch. *-I won't be able to get it back," he concluded.

Miguel grimaced and asked him what was the problem? To which Santa replied:

*-Children today have no respect for adults, don't care about having a life guided by good values and don't know what discipline is. You know what I'm talking about.

Miguel remained thoughtful, he knew Santa was right and he had no arguments to defend himself. He looked at poor Santa with judgmental eyes. Santa showed him inside the velvet bag and told him that if he thought about tomorrow he could see what Christmas would be like the next day. Miguel squeezed his eyes shut and thought about tomorrow. Immediately the bag began to glow and he could see as in a dream all the children waking up the next day and finding no presents under the tree.

The sadness and confusion was evident on their faces. Miguel felt sorry for all the children and his face expressed how sad he felt. It seemed that the children of the world had lost the traditional joy of this holiday season.

Santa told Miguel that the same disappointment he was feeling was felt by his parents every time he got into mischief and got into trouble.

Miguel understood it all. If he continued with that bad behavior other children would take the example and they would all become irresponsible adults. He looked at Santa with his big eyes and asked if it was too late to fix it?

Santa told him that if he changed his behavior he would make his parents happy, his grandparents happy and maybe Christmas would change its course and everyone would get their presents. Miguel made a commitment to Santa to be a well-behaved child because he wanted his cousins and classmates to have a happy Christmas.

As if the night had gone on forever, Miguel woke up tired. He was surprised to be in his bed and heard his cousins coming downstairs to open presents. He went slowly, he was afraid of meeting the sad faces of his relatives when they didn't have presents.

But when he entered the living room he saw all the children laughing loudly and opening beautiful packages that were under the tree. That gave Miguel peace of mind. He turned around and saw his parents worried because they did not know how to tell him that he would not receive the gift he had asked for so much.

Miguel hugged them and told them -*Christmas is this: laughter, sharing, enjoying family and the joy of others. Who wants a silly remote control car when I have a happy family?

His parents showered him with hugs and they all sat down to breakfast. Grandpa, who had gone out to pick up the newspaper, came in with a gift box and a note for Miguel.

The boy read the note privately. It was from Santa who thanked him for thinking and doing his bit to make the world a better place every day. *-Thank you for helping me to bring back Christmas, receive your dream car".

And so Miguel understood that if we think of others and do good every day the world will be better.
