The Osun-Osogbo Grove is among the remainder of the sacrosanct backwoods which ordinarily abutted the edges of most Yoruba urban communities before broad urbanization. In acknowledgment of its worldwide importance and its social worth, the Sacred Grove was recorded as an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005.
The 1950s saw the contamination of the Osun-Osogbo Grove: hallowed places were dismissed, ministers deserted the forest as standard duties and approvals debilitated. Precluded activities like fishing, chasing and felling of trees in the forest occurred until an Austrian, Susanne Wenger, came and halted the maltreatment going on in the forest.
