You can toggle turn based on and off. The default is real time combat where everyone in your party does their own thing but you can jump in and take control of any party member at any time. If you use turn based you need to make a decision for each character on each round of combat, it becomes much more time consuming but alot more tactical.

I can see myself using turn based mode for some of the boss fights but for straight up adventuring it seems much more efficient to stick with real time combat.
