I believe that the idea of God was created to give people a general guideline of how to live within a society. As God has so much might, people live in fear of the wrath of God, thus conforming to a good set of rules. It's also a crutch for when people can't explain something, just like in medieval times when people couldn't explain some phenomenon, it was considered magic.
