I had a similar break last summer. Surgeon recommended similar fixation. I asked if there were risks of the surgery, he said none. I asked if there were risks of not having the surgery he said, your hand won’t work properly & you’ll get terrible arthritis.

I said there are a lot of risks from anesthesia, a lot of risks from the opiates prescribed for pain, a lot of risks from antibiotics, a lot of intraoperative risks from human error & infection risks from having pins in your bone sticking out of your hand for 6 weeks. Also asked if I could be awake for the surgery & he said no. So I said what you’re telling people & not telling people should be criminal.

I elected to not have any surgery, barely had any splint & my hand is 98% as good as it was before, less than a year later. I trust my body
