I believe that the reason why it's seen as abnormal for a guy to ask the age of a girl (especially one you barely know ) is because in some cultures it is believed that once a man knows the age of a woman before marriage he might start seeing the woman differently. So it's better not to know at all unless you want to take things further relationship wise.
