Enjoying octopus fishing with my parents in my childhood. Weekend-Engagement 141
Hi friends, it's a pleasure to participate in this new #weekend-engagement edition organised by @galenkp.
And from here I want to thank you for the topics that you raise every week because this week there is one that I have loved and that has made me remember my father once again. THANK YOU @galenkp.
I spent my childhood in a small village on the coast of Asturias called Árboces, which is the village where my mother still lives and to which I return every weekend.
At the beginning of the nineties I was less than 15 years old. At that time the economic situation in Spain was complicated and the family economic situation was also difficult because my father had had an accident in a coal mine and he had been given a retirement with a partial pension and not a full one.
Therefore, my father, in order to supplement the family income, despite having back pain due to a lumbar vertebrae injury, did not hesitate to go to the nearby beach of Castello to fish 3 or 4 days a week if the rain and cold weather allowed it.
A fond memory
I remember in great detail, even though more than 25 years have passed, a June afternoon when I went down to Castello beach for the first time with my father and mother to catch octopus when I was 9 years old.
On that first occasion my mother also went to the beach with her camera to immortalize my first day of octopus fishing with my father.
I remember that I was anxious to see how an octopus would slowly emerge from its lair attracted by the bait my father was carrying hanging from the end of the rod where sharp hooks were waiting to hunt the octopus.
It was so great the emotion of hunting my first octopus with my father that my heart was beating intensely in each pool where we tried our luck and that emotion and adrenaline through my veins with the first catch is unforgettable and I would describe it as an ecstasy.
After the catches, which I believe were 3 good sized octopus, we returned to the shore and there we finished taking some pictures among the rocks.
Now reviewing the photos I regret that there was no one on the beach to take a picture of the three of us and that the technology of the camera did not have the possibility of automatic shooting or timer.
The fishing days with my father continued
From that day on, when my studies allowed it and always on weekends, I accompanied my father for years to octopus fishing until he had a hip operation to put a prosthesis.
After a few years in which he did not want to go fishing for fear of falling, we gradually recovered the hobby, but in this case with angling from the shore.
A hobby that unites me to him.
After his passing in February 2015, I have continued with the hobby of fishing and during the time I am fishing I feel connected in a special way to him.
And if I can't go fishing, at least I go to one of the lookouts on the beach or the beach itself and on many occasions I take the opportunity to take a picture remembering the pictures we took at that spot on many occasions.
I love you daddy wherever you are for all that I have been able to learn from you.
Best regards and have a good weekend.
