A walk through the historic center of Palencia in search of the Christmas spirit (ESP/ENG)

En estas fechas es inevitable encontrarnos de ambientes navideños en cualquier ciudad que visitemos de España.
En las siguientes líneas os quiero describir un paseo que di por la ciudad de Palencia (Castilla y León) en España, donde inicialmente me costó encontrar decoración navideña incluso en las inmediaciones de su gran catedral, pero finalmente encontré un buen ambiente navideño concentrado en la plaza y en la calle mayor de esta ciudad.

At this time of the year it is inevitable to find Christmas atmospheres in any city we visit in Spain.
In the following lines I want to describe a walk I took through the city of Palencia (Castilla y León) in Spain, where initially I had trouble finding Christmas decorations even in the vicinity of its great cathedral, but finally I found a good Christmas atmosphere concentrated in the square and in the main street of this city.

La semana pasada, dentro de mis innumerables viajes por la península ibérica, estuve en Palencia tras haber estado trabajando en Valladolid durante el día. Decidí hacer noche en Palencia, debido a que el día siguiente tenía una reunión a las afueras de esta ciudad y también porque aún no conocía esta ciudad.
Debido a que llegue aun siendo de día, una vez me registré en el hotel decidí acercarme a las afueras de la ciudad a contemplar una gran escultura de un Cristo que recibe como nombre Cristo del Otero.
El Cristo del Otero es un gran Cristo que parece estar en posición de bendecir a la ciudad de Palencia del escultor Victorio Macho y con sus más de 20 metros de altura es una de las estatuas más grandes de Cristo a nivel Mundial y todo un orgullo para los Palentinos, ya que cuando regrese a la ciudad y di mi paseo por el centro de la ciudad me encontré una escultura en honor al escultor Victorio Macho realizando la escultura del Cristo que me hizo gracia al ver al escultor en una escultura.
Last week, as part of my countless trips around the Iberian Peninsula, I was in Palencia after having been working in Valladolid during the day. I decided to spend the night in Palencia, because the next day I had a meeting in the outskirts of this city and also because I did not know this city yet.
Since it was still daylight, once I checked into the hotel I decided to go to the outskirts of the city to see a large sculpture of a Christ called Cristo del Otero.
The Christ of the Otero is a great Christ that seems to be in position to bless the city of Palencia of the sculptor Victorio Macho and with its more than 20 meters high is one of the largest statues of Christ worldwide and a pride for the Palentinos, because when I returned to the city and took my walk through the center of the city I found a sculpture in honor of the sculptor Victorio Macho making the sculpture of Christ that made me laugh to see the sculptor in a sculpture.
Tras fotografiar el Cristo del Otero, regrese de nuevo al hotel y tras enviar unos emails de trabajo decidí dar un paseo por esta pequeña ciudad.
Tras salir del hotel, me dirigí hacia el centro de la ciudad, donde se concentra en muy pocos metros de distancia la catedral y la plaza mayor de la ciudad. Sin embargo, antes de llegar a la catedral me encontré con una escultura que a muchos les puede resultar curiosa porque representa a dos nazarenos. En esta ciudad, como en otras ciudades españolas, son muy típicas las procesiones de semana santa, donde los cofrades cubren su rostro y cabeza con un capirote, a la vez salen de procesión con las imágenes de las figuras religiosas de las que son devotos. Quiero aclarar, que no se trata del Ku Klux Klan sino de una vestimenta similar que no tiene que ver con el grupo supremacista.
After photographing the Cristo del Otero, I went back to the hotel and after sending some work emails I decided to take a walk around this small city.
After leaving the hotel, I headed towards the center of the city, where the cathedral and the main square of the city are concentrated in a few meters distance. However, before reaching the cathedral I came across a sculpture that many may find curious because it represents two Nazarenes. In this city, as in other Spanish cities, the Holy Week processions are very typical, where the brotherhoods cover their faces and heads with a capirote, and at the same time go out in procession with the images of the religious figures they are devoted to. I want to clarify that this is not the Ku Klux Klan but a similar dress that has nothing to do with the supremacist group.
Estas esculturas de los nazarenos de la Semana Santa, se encuentran al lado de la iglesia de San Pablo, que es una bonita y gran iglesia que está en pleno centro de Palencia.

A continuación, me encaminé hacia la Catedral de Palencia con la ilusión de ver si en esta localización se había organizado, como en otras ciudades que he visitado mercados navideños, como por ejemplo en la ciudad de Oviedo, que os presenté la semana pasada.
Sin embargo, al llegar a la plaza de la catedral me encontré con una situación inédita para mí, que fue estar totalmente solo en una gran plaza en frente de una de las catedrales más grandes de España, pero en mi interior resonaban dos preguntas.
¿Dónde está la gente de esta ciudad si estamos a pocos días de Navidad?
¿Dónde están la luces navideñas que hay en todas las ciudades españolas en esta época?
Next, I headed towards the Cathedral of Palencia with the illusion of seeing if in this location had been organized, as in other cities I have visited Christmas markets, such as in the city of Oviedo, which I presented last week.
However, when I arrived at the cathedral square I found an unprecedented situation for me, which was to be all alone in a large square in front of one of the largest cathedrals in Spain, but inside me two questions resounded.
Where are the people of this city if we are only a few days away from Christmas?
Where are the Christmas lights that are in all Spanish cities at this time of the year?
Por ello, decidí dar una vuelta alrededor de toda la catedral por si los puestos navideños los hubiesen colocado en alguna de las plazas circundantes, pero no me encontré con ningún puesto navideño. Sin embargo, quedé fascinado por el gran tamaño de esta catedral y aproveché para hacer unas fotos a su cúpula trasera, a una de sus enormes vidrieras y también a una fachada trasera que es tan grande como la entrada principal de otras catedrales que conozco.
Therefore, I decided to go around the cathedral in case there were any Christmas stalls set up in any of the surrounding squares, but I did not come across any Christmas stalls. However, I was fascinated by the enormous size of this cathedral and took the opportunity to take some photos of its back dome, one of its huge stained glass windows and also of a back façade that is as big as the main entrance of other cathedrals I know.
Tras el fiasco de no encontrar decoración navideña en la zona de la catedral, decidí poner rumbo hacia la plaza mayor de la ciudad, que es lugar donde se encuentra el ayuntamiento. Para ello, tras atravesar un par de callejuelas, llegue a la calle mayor de Palencia, donde se encuentra la zona comercial de la ciudad y en ella comencé a encontrar mucha gente y también un alumbrado navideño discreto pero a la vez bonito.
After the failure of not finding Christmas decorations in the area of the cathedral, I decided to head towards the main square of the city, which is where the town hall is located. To do this, after crossing a couple of narrow streets, I arrived at the main street of Palencia, where the shopping area of the city is located and in it I began to find many people and also a discreet but at the same time beautiful Christmas lighting.
Tras caminar durante unos minutos por esta calle repleta de gente, me encontré a mano derecha una pequeña calle donde había algunos niños gritando y sacándose fotos con sus padres en este original belén formado por figuras totalmente iluminadas de los tres Reyes Magos y sus camellos.
After walking for a few minutes through this crowded street, I found on the right hand side a small street where there were some children shouting and taking pictures with their parents in this original nativity scene formed by fully illuminated figures consisting of the three wise men and their camels.
Al lado de la bonita representación de los tres Reyes Magos, también había un pequeño tiovivo. Pero este no está en funcionamiento debido a que había estado lloviendo y se encontraba mojado. Por lo que los niños y sus padres estaban esperando a que los propietarios lo acondicionasen para ser disfrutado por los niños.

A continuación, el éxtasis de felicidad fue llegar a la plaza mayor de Palencia, donde me encontré con una bonita plaza totalmente decorada para la ocasión con un árbol de Navidad multicolor, un precioso belén y unos puestos de mercadillo navideño.
Next, the ecstasy of happiness was to arrive at the main square of Palencia, where I found a beautiful square fully decorated for the occasion with a Christmas tree, a beautiful nativity scene and some Christmas market stalls.
El primer punto que visite de la plaza fue el belén, el cual era muy bonito con figuras de gran tamaño que con la tonalidad de luz azul le daba un toque de estilo al belén muy agradable a la vista
The first point I visited in the square was the crib, which was very nice with large figures that with the shade of blue light gave a touch of style to the crib very pleasing to the eye.
Justamente al lado del belén, tenían a su vez varios árboles de Navidad de pequeño tamaño, pero con una luces intermitentes que captaron mi atención.
Right next to the nativity scene, they had several small Christmas trees, but with flashing lights that caught my attention.
Tras esta primera parada dentro de la plaza, al girarme vi que la fachada del ayuntamiento estaba totalmente decorada con una luces muy llamativas y bonitas que deseaban una Feliz Navidad en el centro del edificio.
After this first stop inside the square, when I turned around I saw that the facade of the town hall was fully decorated with a very striking and beautiful lights wishing a Merry Christmas in the center of the building.
A continuación me di una vuelta por los distintos puestos navideños que había en la plaza donde uno podía comprar artesanía local, figuras para el belén, dulces navideños, turrones, etc.
Finalmente, en el fondo de la plaza se encontraba una estructura de árbol luminoso que iba cambiando de color cada cierto tiempo.
I then went around the various Christmas stalls in the square where one could buy local crafts, figures for the nativity scene, Christmas sweets, nougat, etc.
Finally, at the back of the square there was a luminous tree structure that changed color from time to time.
Tras esta visita a la plaza mayor, como estaba empezando a llover de nuevo, decidí retornar al hotel, pero cuando estaba de camino me encontré una iglesia donde había una exposición de belenes y no pude evitar la tentación a detenerme.
El primer belén, justo a la entrada de la iglesia, era un belén donde se podía ver distintas escenas navideñas. Por ejemplo, en una parte se podía ver la entrada de la Virgen María con San Jose en Belén. En otra parte, se podía ver a distintos pastores en camino de adorar al Niño Jesús y, por otro lado, el portal de belén propiamente dicho.
After this visit to the main square, as it was starting to rain again, I decided to return to the hotel, but when I was on my way I found a church where there was an exhibition of nativity scenes and I could not avoid the temptation to stop.
The first nativity scene, right at the entrance of the church, was a nativity scene where you could see different Christmas scenes. For example, in one part you could see the entrance of the Virgin Mary with St. Joseph in Bethlehem. In another part, you could see different shepherds on their way to adore the Baby Jesus and, on the other side, the actual Nativity scene.
El segundo de los belenes, se encontraba próximo al altar de la iglesia y se centraba con figuras de mayor tamaño en la escena correspondiente a la adoración del Niño Jesús por parte de los tres Reyes Magos.
The second of the nativity scenes was located next to the altar of the church and was centered with larger figures in the scene corresponding to the adoration of the Baby Jesus by the three Magi.
Tras esta última parada viendo estos dos belenes, me encaminé hacia el hotel para resguardarme del intenso frío y la lluvia que era persistente en ese momento.
Hasta aquí mi paseo por la ciudad de Palencia. Aunque al principio no encontré muchas escenas navideñas, finalmente me fui muy satisfecho de este paseo que espero les haya gustado.

After this last stop to see these two nativity scenes, I headed back to the hotel to take shelter from the intense cold and the rain that was persistent at that moment.
So much for my walk through the city of Palencia. Although at the beginning I did not find many Christmas scenes, finally I left very satisfied with this walk that I hope you liked.
