This method is called stop loss hunting. Whales sell coin in very low price intentionally . It brings market price down. Then whales turn around and start to buy again at low price after that they wait for recovery of the market price. This strategy they use for a coin which have very low trade volume.
For a coin with huge trade volume whales use another method to manipulate market price. In this case they use uncontrollable sliding movement for market price price. Suppose that the market price of bitcoin is now 6000$. Now whale will start to sell some btc at low price suppose that 5500$. Now they will use this tricks to think other investors that the price is falling. So other investors will start to sell their coin. Now whale will turn around and start to buy until the market price recover.
