What is Monday Mixtape?
A tag to share some tunes you're bumping or spinning through the week. I love being recommended and listening to new music, but know first hand how difficult it can be when you have an overwhelming amount to go through.
I'm hoping Monday Mixtape can be an opportunity to have a manageable amount of new muzaks to check out in an easy to get through format.
I'm also hoping that some of you want to put some together as well so we can start sharing and promoting the sounds that add value to our lives! If you do put a Monday Mixtape post together, please tag me!
For my posts, the genres of music are going to be pretty scattershot, with country and pop being the only genres I don't regularly lend an ear to. If you don't find something scratching your itch, please mess year age me in the comments and we'll find something next week.
1. Emancipator - Anthem (Downtempo Trip-Hop)
'Soon It Will Be Cold Enough', an unassuming cd I bought at CD Warehouse because it looked like some cool low-fi Black Metal record I had never heard of; who would have thought a band named Emancipator would turn out to be this, at the time, 19 year old prodigy making some of the coolest downtempo I've ever heard!
A Winter staple: beautiful, relaxing and calming listen.
It's crazy to think that this has been one of my favorite records for a decade now, but here we are.
2. Bölzer - Entranced By The Wolfshook (Death Metal)
Swiss Metal duo Bölzer burst on the extreme metal scene on the back of their powerful single 'Entranced by the Wolfshook' off their 'Aura' EP.
The song is massive in every way, from the massive riffs, soaring bridge, crunchy transitions and the powerful varied vocal performance.
This song was an instant hit and captivated the extreme metal world, and for good reason. Standing the test of time, 'Entranced by the Wolfshook' still feels forward thinking today and looks to be a timeless addition to the Death Metal time capsule.
3. Lea Bertucci - Patterns for Alto (Experimental)
The subgenre Electroacoustic is composed of the audio manipulation of acoustically-played instruments and usually sits in between the primary genres of improve avant-garde, ambience, drone and noise.
Lea Bertucci is one of the most well regarded of this movement today. Lea's pieces use primarily alto saxophone and bass clarinet with audio manipulation, composed around the describes relationship between acoustic phenomena and biological resonance.
The use of space in her compositions and manipulation of sound coupled with her feel for droning musical textures and how to compose over the top of these layers is masterful, and on full display in her new release 'Metal Aether', from which the track above is taken.
4. Reggie Watts - Fuck Shit Stack [NSFW - Language] (Improve Music Comedy / Hip-Hop)
Glad I got that NSFW for language disclaimer out of the way so that no one would be caught off guard by the surprising amount of profanity in this track - with such an unassuming track name, who would have thought?
Reggie Watts is one of the greatest improv comedians of our generation. His standup / performance / "what the hell do you call this" are so incredibly unique, the man gets invites to Ted Talks like I get credit card company direct mail pieces.
He is an absolute multi-talented genius, and showcases some of this in the tongue-in-cheek rap parody and 80's choreographed censored censored Stack.
I've been caught in many a Reggie video binge, and even blessed to see the man live. Gorgeous hair and a love for the better sweater collection might lure you in, but it's Reggie's unquestionable creativity and talent that make you stay.
5. Carpenter Brut - Leather Teeth (Synthwave)
THIS VIDEO IS NSFW for its 80's themed retro horror montage that was put together by French Synthwave Revivalist, Carpenter Brut, to promote his new album 'Leather Teeth'.
The album is a concept album wherein it is a soundtrack for a retro cult classic horror film that does not exist, but exists in the ethos of the record and the track featured in the promotional video is an excerpt of the epic title track 'Leather Teeth'.
