Well unfortunately IMO HF21 is going to make Steem even more of an "anti-social network", but the light in the tunnel is coming from all the tribes / side chain activity. The main chain is a desert filled with thirsty thirsty vampires for the most part, but you stand a much better chance of meeting communities of real people who care in a sidechain tribe.
