The Mundaka Upanishad visual for the soul as a detached overseer. It describes two golden birds perched on the same tree (the body):

The First Bird: Busy eating the sweet and bitter fruits of the tree (representing the ego, or the self engaged in experience and karma).

The Second Bird: Simply watches the first bird without eating (representing the Atman, or the Supreme Soul/Overseer).

The Overseer Role: The second bird is the "True Self." It is always present, always silent, and never entangled in the drama of the "eater." Liberation comes when the first bird looks up and realizes it is, in essence, the same as the watcher.
