Snail Farm Infestation🐌 🐌 🐌 The Need for Regular Farm Inspection
Hello, my dear fellow Hivers. I hope we are doing great. It's another great day to share with everyone here the importance of regular farm checkups and also expose us to one of the most dangerous farm pests which is also nutritious for consumption.
This morning before preparing for school, I decided to do a farm check knowing very well that I would find some pests on the farm because of the heavy rainfall last night. The snail is a very common farm pest. They love green leaves and are commonly found in plant farms.
While checking up on my maize farm, I noticed a lot of them had developed cobs and husks. Some were still on inflorescence. They haven't matured for harvesting. I also checked up on their roots and found out some had exposed roots probably due to constant erosion. These exposed roots did not affect the plants so I didn't border much about that.
But here comes the main case, the snail infestation. It seemed like each raindrop brought a snail. Snails were present on every leaf I visited. I wondered if it was only my farm they saw. The snails are very destructive.
They can kill a whole plant. I remember reading one of @mattsanthonyit's posts where he made me understand the potentiality of a snail pest on a farm.
After reading his post, I became very cautious and regular in doing my farm check-up.
I saw a lot of snails in different leaves of the maize plants. I engaged in picking them up. The snails mainly attack the foliage parts of a plant, destroy them and leave the plants helpless. If the photosynthesizing part of the plants is destroyed, how will the plants survive?
In each of the plants I saw a snail, there also lies the feces. This means they eat and defecate. This is their feeding process. They can repeat this process of eating and defecating till the infested plant dies.
So to make my visit a remarkable one, I didn't only take away the captured snails, I took that opportunity to develop a little snail farm. Applying common sense which every farmer needs, I set some blocks and made my snail farm at a distance far from the farm.
Despite that snails are very dangerous pests, they can also be reared by farmers(Heliculture) to make money and for family consumption too. Snails are very nutritious as I already said. They contain several minerals and proteins which are very useful to the body. Snails are good sources of Vitamin A, calcium and low amounts of fats.
Thanks for reading and do have a nice day.
