What a powerful report, Stephen! π
The bronze bull of Ruhy Tagzym is impressive. I love it when a monument is built around an ancient legend: the bull holding the Earth on its horns, whose bellow becomes the rumble of the earthquake, explains the 1948 tragedy better than any plaque could. And the mother lifting her baby above the ruins is heartbreaking. π
It's striking that we still don't know how many people died, somewhere between 70,000 and 110,000, all because of Soviet censorship. Here in Italy we also have a long history of earthquakes, and even with all the information available, the wounds take generations to heal. I can only imagine what it means for a people to also lose the truth about their own dead.
I also liked the red stone, which makes these memorials more sombre than the white marble of the rest of the city. Your detail of paying the taxi driver only on the way back made me smile: a true veteran traveller's trick! ππ
Being the only visitor, watched by guards, with a guide who spoke only Russian... another very Turkmen snapshot. Thanks for taking us where very few of us will ever go. πΈ

Che reportage potente, Stephen! π
πΈ
