Here is YouGov's poll:

Who do you think will win the next election?

Labour: 52%
Conservatives: 25%

Does Keir Starmer look like a PM in waiting?

Does: 31%
Does not: 48%

Is Labour ready for government?

Does: 33%
Does not: 45%

There is clearly no enthusiasm for Starmer. Yet at the same time, people are convinced he will win because other people will vote for him.

The last time something like this happened was in 2017. Theresa May was miles in front, and there was a concerted effort from her opponents to make sure she didn't win too big a majority.

In the end, her opponents mobilised so well that she actually lost her majority, and the result was a hung parliament.

The lesson for the Conservatives is that they need to motivate those people who are currently saying they won't vote, to turn out. But to do that, they'll have to find a wedge issue to motivate them.
