The only reason Britain was going to phase out petrol cars and gas boilers by 2030 instead of 2035 as in the EU, is that Boris Johnson, urged on by his environmentalist wife Carrie, was trying to show off at Cop26 and one-up the EU.

It was idiotic. The electric grid can't cope with such a major change so soon.

So Rishi Sunak did the sensible thing and postponed it.

How have voters reacted?

It looks like very strong support from Conservative voters, and significant support from other parties (41% from LibDems for example.

Sir Keir Starmer has yet to respond on behalf of the Labour party. The delay probably means he has no firm views either way and probably wants to conduct opinion polls and focus groups to gauge public opinion before he decides which way to jump.

I wouldn't be surprised if Labour quietly adopted the new Conservative policy in a few days when the news has moved on and no-one is paying attention.
