Two-thirds think we are in recession! Where has this idea come from?

In my opinion it stems from the IMF's ludicrous claims about the British economy in January.

The IMF, if you remember, predicted that the UK would have the worst economic performance of any big country in 2023, worse even than sanction-hit Russia.

This lurid prediction was either treated as fact, "Britain is the worst economy in the western world"; or it was treated as an oracle handed down from the gods, "Britain will perform worse than Russia!"

Only it was complete garbage. Britain continued to grow steadily, albeit slowly. It was Germany that fell into recession.

But the good correct news on the economy didn't get the same coverage as the IMF's incorrect (or fake!) predictions.

As the old adage goes, a lie will make it's way around the world before the truth gets it's boots on.
