On Friday after work I cycled from Basel to Villa Wenkenhof in Riehen. For this, 100 meters of altitude had to be overcome. A good workout. A large, publicly accessible park belongs to the villa. There I looked for possibilities for a light painting. I found the pavilion in front of a riding arena that was built for spectators interesting.
About 300m away, on a terrace with a wonderful view over Basel, there is a horse sculpture. That's when I had the idea of placing the horse as a spectator in the pavilion. So I went to the hotel in Grenzach with the plan to create a light painting here after dark.
Am Freitag fuhr ich mit dem Fahrrad nach der Arbeit von Basel zur Villa Wenkenhof nach Riehen. Dafür mussten erstmal 100 Höhenmeter überwunden werden. Ein gutes Training. Zur Villa gehört ein großer, öffentlich zugänglicher Park. Dort schaute ich nach Möglichkeiten für ein Lightpainting. Interessant fand ich den Pavillon vor einem Reitplatz, der sicher für die Zuschauer gebaut wurde. Circa 300m entfernt, befindet sich auf einer Terrasse, mit herrlichem Blick über Basel, eine Skulptur von einem Pferd. Da kam mir die Idee, das Pferd als Zuschauer in den Pavillon zu platzieren. So fuhr ich mit dem Plan im Kopf ins Hotel nach Grenzach, um nach Einbruch der Dunkelheit hier ein Lightpainting zu erstellen.

The first try
Before sunset I went to the Wenkenhof. This time by car. There is enough parking space there. Contrary to my expectations, the park was still well frequented at that time.
First, I tested the camera settings. I set the focal length to 14mm for the sculpture and 35mm for the pavilion so that the proportions are correct. Two tripods were actually needed for the light painting. Unfortunately I only took one with me. So target practice was announced. I made markings on the floor for the position of the tripod. I remembered the settings. The height of the tripod also had to be adjusted for the two locations.
Unfortunately, the public traffic didn't let up on this Friday. When a thunderstorm came up around midnight, I broke off the plan.
Kurz vor Sonnenuntergang machte ich mich auf zum Wenkenhof. Diesmal mit dem Auto. Parkplätze gibt es dort ausreichend. Der Park war zu dieser Zeit, entgegen meiner Erwartung, noch gut besucht.
Als erstes testete ich die Einstellung der Kamera. Für die Skulptur stellte ich die Brennweite 14mm- und für den Pavillon 35mm ein, damit die Größenverhältnisse stimmen. Für das Lightpainting waren eigentlich zwei Stative nötig. Leider hatte ich nur eins mitgenommen. Also waren Zielübungen angesagt. Für den Standpunkt des Stativs machte ich mir Markierungen auf dem Boden. Die Einstellungen merkte ich mir. Auch die Höhe des Stativs musste für die beiden Standorte angepasst werden. Leider ließ der Publikumsverkehr an diesem Freitag nicht nach. Als gegen Mitternacht ein Gewitter aufzog brach ich das Vorhaben ab.

The final light painting
The next evening I drove back to the Wenkenhof at one o'clock in the morning. This time there was a wedding party here. But the park was empty and the wedding party didn't bother me at work.

RGB CRITTER by Ants on a Melon. It took three tries before the horse was in the right place.
Since the distance between the sculpture and the pavilion was several hundred meters, a few kilometers had to be covered on foot that evening. Another good workout. 😀
In der Nächsten Nacht fuhr ich erneut um ein Uhr morgens zum Wenkenhof. Diesmal gab es hier eine Hochzeitsfeier. Der Park war aber leer und die Hochzeitsgesellschaft störte mich nicht bei der Arbeit.
Für das folgende Bild kam eine
LEDLenser P7R Signature mit Adapter und Farbfilter von Light Painting Paradise und die vor kurzem gelieferte
RGB CRITTER von Ants on a Melon zu Einsatz. Drei Versuche hat es gebraucht, bis das Pferd an der passenden Stelle stand.
Da die Entfernung zwischen Skulptur und Pavillon mehrere 100m betrug, kamen an dem Abend einige km Fußweg zusammen. Wieder ein gutes Training. 😀

WHAT IS LIGHT PAINTING?
Light painting is a unique form of art. The darkness is illuminate by the artist with diverse light sources and light traces are paint into the picture with various light tools. Various techniques are use, such as camera rotation or other movements of the camera during the exposure. The creative possibilities are almost unlimited. All the pictures were taken during one single exposure. Apart from denoising, sharpening, cutting and possibly adjusting the white balance, the pictures are not processed on the computer.
