Before going into the details of the trend of smart car, I would like to tell you a story about my life in Thailand. You might wonder what my life in Thailand has to do with IoT based Smart car but I wanted to share this story because it might help you in envisioning the future where there is smart car.
I was the head of GM Thailand Engineering center for the past 3 years and returned to Korea in the latter of half of last year. Although I lived in Bangkok, my office was in Rayong and I had to commute 300 km every day. My mileage for 3 years was around 200,000 km. considering the road condition, facility, safety infrastructure and others in Thailand, it is a miracle that I didn’t have any accidents during that 3 year period. I spent roughly 5 hours a day in the car commuting. If I had to drive myself, I would have lost time, be tired all the time and led to accidents not being used to left hand driving and probably would not have made it but thankfully the company hired a driver for me so I had no worries. . I spent around 3000 hours in the back seat of the car for the past 3 years and instead of just listening to music or sleeping I remember that time as being very useful. 5 hours a day in the morning and afternoon was a time just for me to check my emails, review material, get new information on the internet, attend conference calls to give directions and make decisions if needed and also read for self-development or sometimes I would take time to recharge. I took this time to plan my day and it was very valuable and meaningful. I never had to waste my time in finding the location or looking for a parking lot. The driver would drop me off in front of the lobby at the exact location and with one phone call he would come pick me up at the exact location. After arriving at work, I would send the driver back home and he’d provide the same service to my wife and kids. I was overall very satisfied with the service except for the times when I noticed that the driver was falling asleep while driving. After living like that for 3 years, it wasn’t easy getting used to the life in Korea again because of all the time I wasted in finding a parking space or going through traffic jam. I realized that I was able to maximize the use/value of time by having a driver.
Until now, this service was only for the few who can afford a driver but with Smart cars, autonomous driving and connected technology, anyone from toddlers, young adults to the elderly can benefit from this service. (will be continue to series 3)
딱딱한 스마트카 기술동향에 대해 나누기 전에 저자가 겪었던 태국생활을 먼저 나누고자 한다. 혹자는 이와 태국생활이 무슨 관계가 있는지 의아해 할 수도 있으나, 나름 스마트카로 경험할 수 있는 미래의 모습을 조금이나마 이해하는데 도움이 될 것 같아 나누고자 한다.
저자는 태국에서 글로벌 자동차회사의 연구소 소장으로 3년간 근무하다가 작년 하반기에 귀임했다. 집은 방콕에 있었지만 회사는 라용에 있어서 매일 왕복 300Km거리를 출퇴근을 하여야 했다. 3년간 누적 마일리지가 20만 Km 나 되었다. 태국의 도로상황이나 시설, 안전 인프라 등을 볼 때 3년 동안 사고가 안 난 것은 기적이다. 매일 하루 평균 5시간정도를 차 안에서 보내었던 것 같다. 만약 자가운전 이였다면 시간낭비, 심신의 피로, 좌측통행으로 인한 사고의 위험 등으로 아마 감당치 못했을 것이다. 그런데 감사하게도 회사에서 운전기사를 지원해 주어서 이런 우려 없이 잘 보낼 수 있었다. 3년간 뒷좌석에 앉아 있었던 시간을 합하면 약3000시간인데, 무의미하게 운전에 신경 쓰며 음악이나 들으며 보낸 시간이 아닌, 매우 유익하게 보낸 시간 이였던 것으로 기억한다. 매일 아침, 저녁으로 주어진 5시간은 나만의 안락하고 조용한 공간에서 메일을 확인하고 보고서를 검토하고, 인터넷으로 정보와 뉴스를 검색하고, 필요 시 전화나 화상회의에 참석하여 업무지시와 의사결정을 하며, 자기개발을 위한 독서 또는 휴식과 재충전 등으로 하루를 계획하고 정리하는 가치 있고 의미 있는 시간으로 전환된 것이다. 어디를 방문하더라도 위치를 몰라 어려움을 겪거나, 주차공간을 찾느라 불필요한 시간낭비를 해본 적이 없다. 목적지에 도착하면 바로 로비 앞에 내려주고, 끝날 때 전화만 하면 정확하게 내가 있는 위치로 차가 오곤 했다. 회사도착 후에 집으로 기사와 차를 보내면 아내와 자녀들도 동일한 혜택을 누렸다. 때때로 운전기사가 졸음운전을 하는 것을 발견하여 사고의 불안감을 느꼈을 때를 제외하고는 대체로 만족도가 높았다. 이런 환경 속에 3년 살다 보니 한국에 귀임한 후 한동안 적응하기가 쉽지가 않았다. 극심한 주차난과 교통체증으로 차 안에서 허비되는 시간이 너무 많았고 불편했기 때문이다. 본인은 태국에서 운전기사의 존재 하나만으로 차와 시간의 활용도/가치가 극대화될 수 있음을 경험했다.
지금까지 이것은 기사를 고용할 수 있는 소수계층만이 누릴 수 있는 혜택 이였다면, 미래에 자율주행과 커넥티드기술이 들어간 스마트카가 활성화 된다면 어린아이부터 청장년, 노인계층까지 누구나 다 누릴 수 있는 혜택이 될 수 있다. (3편에서 계속)
