What could be worse? Having a false friend or a false enemy? It seems easy to distinguish between the two, and I think many would agree that the former would be more serious, since it would be a deception that could affect you directly. But is the latter any less serious? This question takes on greater significance when, at some point in your life, you realize that you once attached a label to something—a concept you believed to be solid at the time but that later, over time, began to fade away. Certainly, there are many aspects through which to examine this reality, but I think among the most common are fear, the fear of being alone, and pain.
Fear. Is it a reaction or a warning signal working in your favor? I’d like to know if anyone has ever wished to feel fear or wondered why they didn’t feel it in a certain situation. In contrast, we always talk about courage as some kind of hero, while fear takes on the role of the villain—and perhaps that’s why many people are even willing to lie rather than admit they’re afraid. From my perspective, true courage belongs to those who never stop moving forward and recognize that fear is part of this journey. Feeling fear is a response to something that will demand more of you and test many good qualities you haven’t yet discovered, but fear shouldn’t be an obstacle you wish to avoid; rather, it’s something real that you must accept and learn to manage.
The fear of being alone. It’s one thing to be alone, but it’s quite another to feel lonely in life. Going to the other extreme is like thinking you need someone else to bring out and develop the best version of yourself. Even if you’re already with someone, moments alone with yourself are still necessary. Activities like meditation and reflection usually require that time and that atmosphere—which the person by your side won’t give you for even a second or a third. For some, being alone is a sign of weakness and failure—wasted time that should have been spent with others. Sometimes, the silence of our solitude is what allows us to find the answer or ask ourselves questions we wouldn’t ask if we were with someone else.
Pain. It’s not that everything in life has to hurt us, but neither do I believe it should be erased from our understanding, since it can affect us at any moment. Whether physical or emotional, we are all exposed to a reality we do not wish to experience, much less see in others. So, is pain a relentless enemy, or a response to what affects and hurts us? If so, then the very existence of pain is something we should be grateful for, as it allows us to respond to whatever threatens our harmony and integrity. Physical and emotional pain can destroy a life, but being aware of that pain is what can help us take action in time.
No one genuinely wants to feel fear, to dread loneliness, or to live with pain, but I assume the best way to deal with them is by accepting that they exist and not trying to run away. Is it easy? Of course not! But it’s better to face things head-on, because even in the worst-case scenarios, you can find that line of reasoning that invites you to question and think about the reasons behind certain things. Thinking back to the questions at the beginning, I believe that what affects us most about a false friend is the deception, while a false enemy leads us to think and categorize based on what we believe we see—but which is actually far from the true reality.
