THE BEST ADVICE I EVER IGNORED
Hello #scifimultiverse friends, I trust your day is going well. There is a popular saying in my country of origin: “If you want to go fast, just go alone, but if you ever want to go far, go together.”
I am a fan of advice; I love listening to people’s advice, especially those who have been there physically and practically before me. I like being on my own and sorting things out without noise, drama, or involving people. Then, my late mum will always call me a one-man riot squad, irrespective of the fact that I am a female. She will always push me to go out and mingle with others rather than stay home playing alone.
At some point while growing up, she noticed that I still don’t mingle with others much. She called me and said, “Never be shy to ask for assistance in times of need and never walk alone”. I sat quietly for minutes, playing back and reflecting on that advice. This is because I was only a secondary school graduate, still finding meaning in life. So, I ignored the advice and kept relishing the moment as a home girl.
My Late Mum
However, a few years after that candid advice, she passed away.
That abrupt end opened a new chapter in my life, as I would always stay in our room with nobody pushing me to mingle with others. My dad will always leave for work very early. While my siblings and others staying with us will be outside or in the living room throwing banters and playing, I will be inside.
At some point, my father will come back and ask about me every time. He will sometimes ask me the reason for being inside, to which I will always reply, nothing. While in that state, I secured admission to the university, and things started happening fast.
First, I started missing lectures because I am not always where others are to get first-hand information. Before you know it, I started missing out on freebies for the newbies at school. The one that got to me was missing out on departmental training that we all paid for. After that ordeal, I cried out alone, sat down, and borrowed myself sense. By then, I had made a whole lot of mistakes. I had a deep reflection about my life and decided to change for good.
A new chapter
At that juncture, I joined all groups at the school, formed a study group, and blossomed into success. I not only started moving fast, but I started going far in life, simply because I turned 360 degrees to the advice of my late mum ‘’never to walk alone”.
In conclusion, I believe experience is the best teacher. When we experience situations, we learn from our mistakes and may never want to make such mistakes. People should not be micromanaged but allowed to make their mistakes and grow.
