This is an original design that is supposed to be a part of the village building project that I did last year under the Frostfall world drawing challenge. I must admit that the said village building drawing challenge was quite overwhelming and I was not able to complete it. Looking at all the sketches I made back then I think this one needs to see the light. I am taking advantage of the new let's draw challenge posted in our Draw A Day community because the theme which is "Night" could very well fit this unfinished sketch I made. So here it is a twin building that could house several Frostfall villagers like a two storey abode with many rooms. I like to keep it cute, cozy, warm with comforting lights, tidy and with a rounded shape.
The sketch above is my final line drawing after tweaking the shape a bit. The initial sketch has some railings around the building but I wanted to keep it neat this time. I particularly love the tapered mushroom roof structure that gives this building a beautiful whimsical look. I made the chimneys to follow that same tapered shape. It could look like a tip of the pear or an onion. I just love it. I kept the snow because it will provide a nice contrast against the dark night sky background.
For the base colors I did not use anything different from what I have been using for my Frostfall village buildings. The warm terracotta on the chimney the butterscotch yellow on the base of the building and that burnt reddish brown as accent for the wooden doors.
The steps are slate green and the window frames are grayish blue. The blue background is the same shade of royal blue like in my original Frostfall world. I am almost done here I added the luminous moon and twinkling stars being careful not to overdo it. One satisfying detail I added here is the smoke coming out of the chimneys. I want it to be faint almost like a thin veil or a fleeting ghost.
I am already happy with the building looking complete and the colors are working for me but it needs more night time vibe and so I added a new layer. A layer for the dark shadows which I think would work well with the snow and the colors of the building. I used the royal blue background but adjusted its value and made it darker and applied a thick layer on areas where I intend to put the shadows. I strategically put some around the rotund shape of the roof to highlight the mushroom like appearance then around the doors to make them part of the focus. Since this is going to be a longer shadow I extended it down the steps. I noticed that the smoke on the chimneys lack an interesting shape, it should have movement and texture so I adjusted by erasing just a little part of the edges to achieve this ghostly appearance.
I had fun making this participation in the let's draw night I was really looking for something to draw tonight and I am happy to have seen the said drawing challenge. My sketch from last year is now done and ready to see the light. Hope you like it. Thank you for reading
