As a writer myself, I think I can offer you some advice.
There's first thing I'd tell you is toughest be yourself. The truth is so that if you go searching, you'll find so many 'what tos' and soon enough, you'll find yourself doing things simply because it's the norm. The key most times I took throw all caution to the the wind and just express yourself like you are writing to please only you. When that's done, you can laters edit and make your book more readable, as the case may be.
Another advice I'd give to you is to read as many books on your chosen niche as possible. See how others wrote theirs especially those who have a reputation for having written the best books in your niche. Also, you want to watch movies that circle around your chosen niche. So, if fantasy issues what interests you, go for fantasy novels (don't want to mention names, l leave that to you), watch moves that are based on fantasy. This will help you a great deal.
Another thing you want to do is to write as often as possible. The thing is the more you write, the better you become. My life is an example, a testament that to fact that this works. Write consistently and don't measure the yourself without anybody but your past. Aim to get better.
Join forums online that deals with writing. They help a great deal. It makes you relate with upcoming and already established authors so that you get a feel off what works and what doesn't.
