One thing about me is that I am very big on trust issues. I do not trust people easily, or should I even say at all, due to the things happening around the world, the things I watch on social media, and the life experiences of people I know. Oh yes, I also have my own personal experiences too.
So, trusting people is one of the hardest things for me. When someone tells me something, I need to verify it myself rather than trusting them blindly.
When it comes to both influencers and doctors, I do not blindly trust either of them. I just do not always have a choice, so I will do what the doctor says. Even when a doctor tells me something, I still use ChatGPT to make enquiries and learn more, just to be sure I understand what the doctor is saying. So, often when I visit the hospital, I have already chatted with ChatGPT to have some knowledge of what could be going wrong and the possibilities the doctor might mention.
Nowadays, we have many quack doctors. Back in the days before AI, you had this confidence that the doctor knew exactly what they were talking about. But now, it is crazy how you can tell a doctor your symptoms and the next thing, they are asking AI questions to help them figure out what could be wrong with you.
And the question that comes to my mind is: did I pay that consultation fee for you to use ChatGPT to figure out what might be wrong with me when I can also do some of that research myself?
But then, I always keep my calm.
This has also been a problem for many patients, and perhaps one reason some people end up getting different explanations after visiting different hospitals. It is just crazy out there, and we should honestly pray that we never have a serious illness that requires serious medical attention.
Some doctors are simply not what they used to be. There are concerns about the quality of medical training, students using AI to cheat in examinations, people getting opportunities through connections, and so many other things happening around us.
So, in a way, we are putting our lives in the hands of people we have to trust, even when we are not completely sure of their competence.
I once heard about a patient who reportedly died after a doctor administered a drug through an injection when it was supposedly meant to be administered another way. Whether that particular story is completely accurate or not, it is frightening to even think about.
Then, regarding influencers, I think they can be even more difficult to trust because some are not necessarily focused on the well-being of the people following them. They are focused on making money, and some will promote almost anything as long as they are getting paid.
Recently, there was a lot of discussion about GMO foods in Nigeria. While some people came out strongly against them, claiming that they were harmful and contained chemicals, a health influencer who has been telling people what to do and what not to do came out to say that GMO foods are safe for consumption.
This was around the time he had met Bill Gates, and that immediately raised questions among some people. Is he genuinely saying what he believes to be true, or is there something else influencing his position?
Personally, this is why I do not blindly trust anyone.
Not doctors.
Not influencers.
Not even the people I know.
I listen, I ask questions, I verify, and then I make my decision.
